Περιγραφή – Περίληψη

This study increases the understanding of FGM in Europe by estimating the number of girls at risk of female genital mutilation in six Member States of the European Union: Belgium, Greece, France, Italy, Cyprus and Malta. The study builds upon the methodology developed by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) to estimate the risk of female genital mutilation, as outlined in detail in EIGE’s Step-by-Step Guide1 (hereafter referred to as ‘EIGE’s risk estimation methodology). It represents a continuation of EIGE’s earlier work, in particular research conducted in 2015 to pilot the risk estimation methodology within three Member States: Ireland, Portugal and Sweden (EIGE, 2015). The study aims to provide better information on the experiences and potential numbers of girls at risk of female genital mutilation in Europe, as well as to assess the effectiveness of measures to combat this practice. The data collection period for this study was between August 2017 and January 2018. The research has both a quantitative and a qualitative component. Combining both components provides a more accurate and comprehensive picture than one obtained through quantitative or qualitative analysis alone. (Excerpt from the Introduction)
