Research Phases & Work Packages
The project lasts 24 months and develops in 3 Phases. WP1 Coordination & Management and WP6 Dissemination & Exploitation will extend for the duration of the project, while WP2 & WP3 will be implemented in Phase 1, and WP4 & WP5 in Phase 2. Phase 3, which culminates the project, is devoted to the exploitation of research results.
Phase 1: Archival research (m1-m8)
Phase 1 lasts 8 months and includes mainly archival research for WP2 & WP3. Archival research involves a close re-reading of gender studies scholarship in Greece, focusing on the issue of gender violence. Taking a genealogical approach, WP2 aims to revisit this scholarship from the late 1970s onwards, following the trajectory of feminist engagement with/in the academy, to identify main themes, approaches and phases in the thematization of gender violence in gender studies. On the other hand, WP3 will pursue an alternative approach, taking the methodology of archive-trouble as a frame of reference and focusing on the relationship between academic feminism and feminist movements in Greece in more recent years. The corpus of material selected and studied in WP2 and WP3 will be organized in a searchable Digital Repository and a digital Counter-Archive, which will be used as references in next phase of the project, as well as resources for the wider research community.
Phase 2: Fieldwork (m8-m19)
Phase 2 lasts 12 months and involves empirical research in Athens and Crete for WP4 & WP5. WP4 will focus on the relationship and possible tensions between feminist academia and activism, as far as theorizing and mobilizing against gender violence goes, focusing on the metropolitan context of Athens. Research will include in-depthinterviews with key feminist and queer scholars and activists, as well as fieldwork and focus-groups with grassroots feminist and queer initiatives. Research for WP5 will focus on the more local context of Crete, in order to consider, on the one hand, the particular challenges confronting feminist scholars and activists mobilizing against gender violence, and on the other, how translocal connections are built and experienced. Research will include fieldwork with grassroots initiatives mobilizing against gender violence, including feminist and queer collectives, antiracist groups, teachers’ associations, and student unions. Qualitative interviews and focus groups will be conducted in the cities of Heraklion and Chania, which constitute important local activist nodes. Apart from academic publications, each WP will produce a Podcast, for the dissemination of research results to the wider public.
Phase 3: Preparation of final output and exploitation of results (m19-m24)
Phase 3 lasts 6 months and involves work conducted in WP6 for the final output of the project, including exploitation of research results and their dissemination to the wider community of gender scholars, researchers and activists. Activities include two Final Day-Conferences, one to be held in Athens and the other in Rethymno. Final Day-Conferences will include invited keynote speakers, a session for the presentation of research results, as well as two Stakeholder Round-Tables with members of the academic and activist community who participated in the research. Their organization in Athens and Crete respectively will facilitate the participation of locally based scholars and students, activists and members of the public, thus ensuring a wider and more inclusive dissemination strategy.
